Do you want a quick pick-me-up at work to boost your mood? By simply asking the question, “Am I happy?” and if you are, you’ll acknowledge the feeling and continue being so. But if your answer is no, it might be time to take a look at the bigger picture.

Adam Kurtz, a creative entrepreneur and author, mentioned that being happy is no secret. It is such a vast idea, and everyone is desperate for it. People believe they know the things that will make them happy, yet they aren’t.

In his upcoming book titled “Things Are What You Make of Them,” Kurtz writes about various inspirational essays, along with no-nonsense advice for those with creative minds. Here are a few of his tips to live a happier life.

  1. Accept and love yourself.

Sometimes, life’s biggest enemy could be yourself. We are constantly being reminded of the things that we don’t have, making us lose focus on the things that we already have and what makes us special. These are the things that will help you love and embrace yourself.

  1. Accept sadness.

Faking happiness will not make you happy either, and this is why you shouldn’t fool yourself into thinking that you are happy. Recognize the things that are causing you this emotion and take action. The process can be quite challenging and may need time to process, but the results will definitely set you free.

  1. Set goals and achieve them.

It is equally important to have something positive to look forward to as it makes an incentive that needs to be rewarded. If you set goals and successfully achieve them, no matter how small, it will motivate you to make goal-setting a habit in the future.

  1. Let nature embrace you.

According to research, almost half of the people in our world today suffers a deficiency from Vitamin D, a vitamin that we can soak up from the sun. As what Kurtz says, it may not always be rainbows and sunshine, but a decent amount of those is more than good enough.

  1. Get a new perspective.

It’s quite easy to get burned out from our jobs and our other responsibilities. When you feel that you are stuck and there is nothing else in the world other than that, it’s time to go out and let the world inspire you. Kurtz recommends reading more, traveling more, or even learning a new skill.

  1. Find joy in the smallest of things.

Give yourself credit for all the wins in your life, regardless of how small it is. Find joy and be grateful that you wake up in the morning, you can run errands, or even when you pay your rent on time. These may seem insignificant, but for others, they could be major accomplishments. So be grateful and be happy for these little things.

  1. Forget perfection.

The world isn’t perfect and neither are you, so don’t be too much of a perfectionist. Instead of seeking out perfection in the smallest of details, be happy with whatever you’re getting. Kurtz says that you need to find ways to be happy with the things that you already have, so that you will always have exactly what you need.

Happiness is not a destination; it is a journey. And along your journey in life, happiness will find its way to you, if you allow it.
